Havent been to GF...what direction is the best way to ride the trails? I want to head out there today before the weekend traffic gets out of hand!

There really isn't any "best way" to ride the trails since currently, they are two separate loops connected by a single trail and the bridle path along Allenton Rd.
You can park at the Roundhouse parking lot and ride Dogwood counterclockwise then take the DeClue connector over to Allenton Rd. and ride DeClue counterclockwise up to the radio tower. Then you can turn around and ride it back the way you came.
Another seemingly popular route is to park at the radio tower lot, ride DeClue clockwise and then take the connector over to Dogwood and ride it any way you like. Then you could come back to your car along the bridle path or go back the way you came.
There are other variations, including a figure 8 which will have you going up or down the big rocky hill below the radio tower.
If it's your first time there, you might want to start at the Roundhouse and ride both trails CCW. That way you get to have a look at the rock garden on DeClue going up first, before you go down it.
The map is here in case you haven't seen it: http://www.gorctrails.com/trails/mgreensfelder.asp

+1 on Pilznr's first suggestion of parking at Roundhouse. The Dogwood is such a fun trail, and a good warm-up. I like to hit it in reverse after the out-n-back on DeClue to the cell tower.

Also, don't be afraid to go exploring. The entire park is now multi-use. All trails in the park are open to bikes since May 2008. The Eagle Valley doubletrack/gravel road is worth checking out via the Greenrock.

Here's a complete trail map. http://www.co.st-louis.mo.us/parks/trailmaps/trail-Greensfelder.pdf

If you get to the Scenic overlook there's a nice very technical downhill shortcut to the outer switchback... check it out. There is some very technical stuff on the return from Eagle Valley gravel road. I think it's on the Deer Valley trail

Just be courteous to the equestrians if/when you encounter them (even if the courtesy is not returned). Bikes should always yield to all other users and that's especially important at this park.

How's the riding on the Deer Run trail? Looks like an easy connection from the top of Declue (across from the Dogwood parking lot).

This information is excellent. Thanks very much.

man, the horses have really had their way with the trails out there...Friday afternoon with no rain for the last 5 days, there was still standing water in horse tracks in about 4 places. You'd think with so much pressure on us to be low/no-impact, the horseback riders would get some flack for that kind of trail beating....it really sucked the fun out of a few sections of trail.

in general though, much as I remember...no flat, good challenging trails....ran ccw both dogwood then declue...that last hill to the radio tower sucks, but the dh right before it is schweet.

Thanks for everyones help.

The part of Deer Run I have hiked was a horrible, horse destroyed, fall line, muddy trail. This was only about half of a mile.

I hiked a 10 mile trail from Rockwood Reservation to Greensfelder about 3 years ago. Signs are up on the RR side for it and I was just wondering if anyone knows the route/has a map for it as I'd like to go try it on my bike. Also don't know if RR would allow bike usage on it's half, if I remember correctly it was about 1/2 GF 1/2 RR straddled by the main road that splits the two parks.

I thought RR didn't allow bikes...unless that has changed.

Thrasher, is that the latest and greatest map? I don't see a trail northeast of the intersection of the pavement and Eagle Valley Trail (just south of that cutoff you were referring to).

You're all on double secret probation!

I thought Rockwoods Range allowed bikes, horses, and hikers on the Fox Run, Roundhouse Loop, and Fox Creek Spur, but only hikers on the Greenrock. I would not recommend the Round House Loop because of horse damage. Fox Creek Spur was okay though. Haven't been on Fox Run yet.
